Supporting our regions

Regional development is about the people who live, work and invest in our regions. It is about the community and economies in these regions, and how they contribute to a growing and sustainable future for all Western Australians.

WA’s 9 regions are diverse, each differing in population, demographics, service access, industry focus, geography and natural resources. The department supports Western Australians in the regions through policy, services and programs like the Regional Pensioner Travel Card, the Local Content Adviser Network, and a range of Grants and support opportunities.

Regional Development Portfolio

The Regional Development Portfolio strengthens WA’s regions and ensures local priorities inform State decision-making. It is delivered through the department and the 9 Regional Development Commissions, which work together to implement regional development policy and programs across the State.

Regional Development Commissions

Regional Development Commissions are defined by groupings of Local Government Authorities. They focus on long-term social and economic growth within each region.

Regional Development Council and Western Australian Regional Development Trust

The Regional Development Council and the Western Australian Regional Development Trust provide statutory advice to the Minister for Regional Development, supported by 9 Cabinet Ministers representing each region.
